Maya Calendar

Tomorrow night we are going to hear my college-professor friend’s colleague speak at our local university about the Maya calendar.  The kids are going to join us, so I went online and found some materials about the Maya calendar, number system and common glyphs they used to give them a little preparation for the talk.  The kids were “helping” me search, and they loved looking at the glyphs so much that I printed some out for them to color.  They had a blast making up stories about each glyph and saying the unfamiliar names.  They also quickly caught on to the base 20 counting system.  We learned how to express numbers using dots and bars, and then saw some examples of “fancy” numbers with decorated dots and bars.  It was just a quick survey of the material, but very interesting.
