The Akron Civic Theatre puts on the “Festival of Nations” every January and we finally got to put it on our calendar this year.
Some of the performers this year…The Lakota Nation Dancers – Native American, Allegro Dance Company – Italian Dancers, Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle, O’Hare Irish Dancers, Shri Kalaa Mandhir, and The Gracanica Folklore Group.
A wide variety of International Foods will be available for purchase.
Demonstrations will be given by the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble in the Upper Salon and the O’Hare Irish dancers will be giving dance lessons in the lobby.
The most fascinating (for us) was the Gracanica group, because my husband’s father emigrated from Yugoslavia (Serbia) when he was just 12 years old. The girls got to meet a few of the ladies from the group who were selling pastries and food in the vendors’ area, and everyone was very excited to learn they were second-generation American grandchildren.
S6 loved the Irish step dancers, too. She participated in one of their little clinics at the festival and has been doing little foot-moves all day since.
We sampled some of the food and watched most of the performances, and wandered up to the second floor to explore some of the Chinese percussion instruments being demonstrated there.
