Grace Darling

We started on Fifty Famous Stories last year and are still working through them.  Today we read “Grace Darling”:

Grace Horsley Darling (24 November 1815 – 20 October 1842) was an English Victorian heroine who in 1838, along with her father, saved 13 people from the wreck of the SS Forfarshire.

I loved that it was a strong female protagonist instead of the typical heroic-man story.  That was a very nice surprise.

This year I am having the girls keep a reading journal in addition to a nature journal.  They are asked to draw a picture and/or write a little something about each thing we read.  I think this will be beneficial on many levels.  O4 drew an interesting picture of Grace.  S6 has not yet drawn hers; she decided to work on it tonight after soccer so she could draw in her nature journal instead.
